BACK TOWARD FORNONCK
Scene 46
Derizan’s group had departed. Now Terrenci, Turtuz, and their companions exited the shaft to the portal chamber and gathered to head towards the shaft to the hatch. The distant banging on the hatch continued as they moved back up the tunnel.
“They’re still up there trying to get down here,” Nakiran said. “Why are we headed straight toward them?” Munizkara nodded agreement.
Terrenci said, “We want to get as far past the shaft as soon as we can and let them come down and head the other way, towards the portal. They’re not looking for us. They’re tracking the andro and the deserter.”
“But that’s a long walk! We’ll never get there in time.” Mentrianos.
“We were walking slowly coming down this way,” Terrenci answered. “So if you want to avoid these trackers and killers, it’s time to run!” She darted ahead up the tunnel, not looking back.
The women were first to chase after her. Inkurisar and Mentrianos looked at each other. Turtuz grated, “Better go after them. We don’t know how many are chasing. If the banging stops, run faster!” And going after the others, the three men ran.
The six of them puffed past the shaft up to Fornonck as the banging continued. “Can’t we rest now?” Nakiran.
“No! Keep going!” Turtuz hissed, bringing up the rear. As if to emphasize his words, the banging from up the shaft abruptly stopped.
