They grow as a sheath around a normal hand, their hard central cartilaginous tissue springing from forearm bone insertions. See also bushfingers, used in fine-motor tasks.

The First Dynasty, ruled by the Arcus Coll and its clans, lasted for over 3200 years, starting in year 1801 AC (After Colonization). The Arcus rulers established their own dating, using the same calendric structure as before but starting the count of years at their ascendancy. In 530 Arcus, the Peace Republic began, converting an autocratic rule into an oligarchy, but still under Arcus domination.“

Ordinary flying machines consume too much energy, and pour out particulates and toxic organics in the vulnerable parts of the atmosphere; the corps use them under strict license from the regional governments on a flight-by-flight basis.

The Gene Laws were put into effect in 8641 AC, or 66 4D. In 9676 AC, or 1102 4D, the governing system now in effect [in the time of the story], the Security Arch, was put in control.“

- an ArCorp fabric like furstripes, but much thicker, and not grown in strips; it is either plain in its texture, or else underlaid with artistic skill to produce a figurative, tapestry-like effect.
