ultracold: at or near cryosleep temeperatures.

ultrasonics: any pressure-wave emissions with primary frequencies in excess of 25KHz. These waves are focused and tuned to perform a variety of tasks, including the reduction of stone to powder (see stoneshaper ). Andro speech, anjive, is generally ultrasonic in frequency.

ultraspace: a rendering of the Zashinhalh term for a particularly-important range of dimensions in hirh-space.

ultrawind: the movement of radiation through ultraspace.

umbrance: the appearance of a light source when viewed in the dazzle of a more-powerful source of light; its darker appearance suggests shadow, but there is no absence of energy, only a difference of high intensities of it. The term is especially applicable in hirh-space, where radiance is the norm.

umbrous: dark, shadowed, dusky.

Unagrist: a pre-Colonization being, imprisoned in the City in a corridor wall niche.

underarmor: a form of individual body protection worn underneath ordinary garments. Thin as silk, it can stop or turn aside knife thrusts and small-arm beam blasts, sacrificing its own material in the process.

underbass: the use of extremely-low frequencies of sound, down around 2-10 Hz, to provide rhythmic pulse to slow music.

underbrown: a coloration visible only to the Zashinhalh, so named by them because it occurs where humans see dark brown while experiencing emotional withdrawal.

underspace: a Zashinhalh term for the limited set of dimensions encompassing spacetime and a few other aspects of reality.

underspoke: underpinned, provided subtext and context at multiple levels.

understreet: understreet, understreets: a street of any of the underground cities. Also called ‘street’. Typically twenty to thirty feet wide, with a ceiling eight feet high at the wall and arching to ten or eleven feet at the center of the way. Usually lighted along the center (highest) point of the arch, although streets in the upper levels often used side lighting directed upward to reflect a general glow from carefully-cleaned ceilings. Most populated areas had considerable plant and animal life clinging to niches established in these streets, much of it bioengineered to cleanse and recycle pollutants.

unipad CD: a digital-music disc containing a concealed stream of random data used as a one-time pad for text encryption and decryption. To anyone unaware of its purpose, it matches any ordinary music disc, but the use of a specific program extracts from it the data stream for application to a text, rendering the text either readable (decrypted) or unreadable (encrypted). Such discs are usually tucked into a collection of ordinary music discs to disguise them.

UniTrition: a brand name for nutritional and recreational pharmaceuticals made by UniCorp.

University: The University, University: the centralized higher educational facility of Tarnus, situated in one of the rare large surface concentrations of population in Muathen, some distance south and east of the City. UNSA: United Nations Security Agency, an outgrowth of an alliance between the United States NSA and the Russian FSB, developed to provide the western nations and combines with good information about the Sinese combines and Hau Ren, and keep watch over subversive activites.

unspending: not losing energy.

upcity: the upper levels of the City, or any city, in which the well-off live. In the City, the lowest parts of the upcity zones begin at the level of Naga Zone.

upflight: a Zashinhalh term for movement out of the three-dimensional space into the wider world.

Upper Continent: Muathen, Upper Continent: Muathen: the largest land mass on the planet, occupying perhaps half of all the land surface. Ranges from the arctic circle (lowest reach of midnight sun) to just below the equator. Bounded on the east by the Great Eastern Sea, on the south by the Lower Continent (Sirathen), on the west by the Little Ocean, and on the north by the Crash Range.
