ecodestruction: the elimination of complex, species-rich, thriving ecosystems as a matter of large-scale (e.g., national and regional) policy.

ecostation: ecostation, ecostations: self-sustaining outposts spread across the planet, containing purification equipment and breeding environments for viral, bacterial, protozoid and higher life-forms used to harvest toxins and build nourishing biomass for the planet‘s desired biota.

Edward: Miriam‘s brother, killed in a savage street attack on Earth.

eightday: eightday, eightdays: the work cycle of the Tarnus calendar.

einstrand: a type of rope or cable consisting of long single-molecule strands maintained and repaired by integral pseudo-bacteria.

EJ: one of the identifying codes used for conduits in the City; this one, as used in the code ‘1-EJ’ is an abbreviation for a conduit carrying an external high-power connection. The number 1 in the code is a serial.

electroacoustic: a combination beam, pairing electromagnetic pulses with ultrahigh-frequency sound pulses, tunable to certain chemical reaction resonances to accelerate or retard the reaction rates by factors of 1000 or more. Useful in disrupting physiological homeostasis, unto death.

Elena: Elena Phom, cryosleep researcher, doctor on starship Tompuso, and friend and associate of Miriam.

Ellichik: a grip, leader of fighters in the insurrection, just below a barker in rank. Led Nargolin, Ezzar, Grendel and two others on the assault on the reactor complex.

EmpCo: short name for The Employment Company, evolved and rebuilt from a centuries-old corporation of a similar name. From among the ranks of the prisoners it managed across its global empire, EmpCo supplied ten of thousands of highly-skilled and trained engineers and scientists who served as low-cost labor for starship fabrication.

EMPulse: electromagnetic pulse use in weaponry: very brief, very intense bursts of energy capable of disrupting electronic circuitry and even a few biochemical processes.

enterogenic: a rejuvenating complex of bacterial and viral engines used to restore and maintain digestive capacity, and heal any damage to the alimentary canal.

Espanic: a post-21st-century term for anyone having ancestry predominantly from Latin America.

Esqueer: Esqueer, squeer: n., a light alcoholic beverage frequently used to wash down a hit of metathellin.

Essa: a friend and lover of Tomas.

Essential Protocol: dictated by the aliens to the humans at the start of their trade relationship. It specifies explicitly that humans are to avoid all alien property, specifically the spacecraft and its environs. Use of alien implements and technology are forbidden to humans, except with collective permission and full-time alien supervision. The aliens agreed to restrict their own movements to areas defined by human authorities, although in practice the definition of authorities became blurred to the convenience of the aliens.

exoarmor: the specialized anchitin outgrowths from the bones of andros serving the aliens as guards or soldiers. This material, weaving metallic threads, organic fibers and a variety of natural glues and matrices, has the impenetrability of Kevlar and the hardness of bone, with much less mass than either one.

express train south: the mountain officers who train City militia use this expression to refer to a trainee or other unfortunate who loses grip and rope, and goes off the face of the Great South Fall: “He took the express train south.”

extrasolar: away from the solar system, outside the Sun’s gravitational well and the planetary orbits inside it.

eyeface: eyeface, eyefaces: a visual tool supplied with repair kits for machinery such as autocarts and vans, guns, and communications and security equipment. Designed to lie against the eyeball and provide a virtual-reality interface for making microrepairs.

eyefacet: eyefacet, eyefacets: individual components of the eyes of cicadal sand related indigenous insectoids.

eyeshield: eyeshield, eyeshields: the visor layers of the war helm used to protect the wearer’s eyes from radiation of all forms, and provide a screen for the heads-up display of battle data.

EZ: Grendel‘s name for Ezzar, stressed on the ‘Z’.

Ezzar: fighter for the insurrection, formerly married to Boren. Formerly mother of two children. Formerly a martial-arts trainer. Grendel is her companion.
