SHE HOPED HER WORDS WERE TRUE

A cry snapped Marra awake in the chair next to the guest room. She was by the man’s bed before she was fully awake. His body twitched, jerked, twisted, and he cried out again: “No!” Something was wrong with his movements. Turning up the light, she looked closely at his wrist. The tendons had been cut.

She gulped, and put her hand on his face. “I’m Marra. It’s all right. You’re safe now.” She fed him some of the broth they had made for him, and he drank eagerly. She hoped her words were true. Before she had laid his head down again, he was asleep.
