HE BARELY KNEW ITS NAME

He woke knowing only that he was Jeddin, and he was hungry, and he would need new clothes and work. Somehow none of these deficiencies seemed a problem, not just now. All pain had vanished; a smooth, vibrant serenity filled him.

The corridor was empty. He stepped from the niche, looked down at his healthy, young, pale-skinned body dressed in decaying rags, and then set off. The maze of stone streets and stairs yielded to him; he was at home, though he barely knew its name.
