The chill, much deeper and longer, came later. In her sister’s cubby in Monford‘s outlying corridors, she stared at the rock ceiling alone in the underground night, excitement surging and ebbing, afraid to dream yet again of the little face looking up at her saying Mama, afraid to remember her parents now gone and lost.

Born and bears and dies in her family always, the scars read. Her husband Boren had loved to read her inscription with his fingers, in bed in the dark when the baby had gone to sleep. She ground her teeth and the tears started.
